Confused by your cameras settings and manual? You're not alone! Whether you are stuck on automatic or starting to explore the functions of your camera but still not satisfied with your shots, this course will enhance both your creative and technical ability to take the pictures you want. Suitable for beginners or improvers using either compact cameras or digital SLRs, it's not all technical; you will see that along with your camera settings, your eyes and your ability to move are your key creative tools. You will be taught fundamental rules of composition and to recognise what to include in your photos and what to exclude. This course gives you the tools to both understand your camera better and develop your approach to photography. You will come away with a whole new way of looking at and making images and almost certainly understand what the settings dials and numbers on your camera mean.

Suitable for photographers who have a basic understanding of aperture and shutter speed modes or settings. Compostion and control are keys to photographing landscapes, seascapes and skyscapes. In this course we look at how to evaluate a location, how to use available light and how to calculate where the light will fall at different times of day. We select andgles and compositions that refelct the grandeur and atmosphere of a landscape and learn how and when to use foreground interest to increase the impact of your images. We will look at techniques for coping with flare, glare and hard to guage exposures as well as the control and use of polarising filters - all of which help to move your photography forward considerably. A tripod is essential for this course as we cover timed exposures that allow you to control both depth of field and compostion precisely. It is usually possible to borrow a tripod if requested before the course .

PHOTOGRAPHING PEOPLE

We have a model available for this course but for 1:1 courses you are welcome to bring a friend or family member as a model - a great opportunity to take some lovely portrait shots.

Suitable for photographers who have a basic understanding Aperture and Shutter Speed. This course covers all you need to hone your skills in this area. From Poised Portraits to Candid Shots capturing images of people engrossed in activites and Street Photography, this course looks at the many different ways of photographing people. You will be shown techniques and practice using lens choice/focal length to change the impact of the image and you will work with depth of field to pick your subject out from the background. We also look in detail at the role of composition, location, shape, colour tone and lighting and cover tips and techniques for shooting individuals and groups and creating family portraits. Importantly you will also work on the interaction between photographer and subject that so often makes the difference between a snap and a wonderful photograph.

MACRO WILDLIFE WOODLAND AND BIRD PHOTOGRAPHY

Suitable for photographers who have a basic understanding of Aperture and Shutter Speed modes or settings and are ready to progress to Manual photography. This course is held at Stodmarsh nature reserve, which is a unique area of wetland, with marshes, reedbeds, lakes and woodland that is home to a rich variety of wildlife, especially water birds which can be seen from several hides. We explore ways of finding a range of fascinating creatures and how to photograph them using Macro Photography techniques. Your will have the opportunity to take photographs of some of the most beautiful woodlands in the area and also be taught how to use Macro Photography and light to emphasise the many and varied flora and fauna . The day is an enjoyable adventurous exploration but the Photographic skills of using light, emphasising texture and being able to photograph small objects work beautifully to improve your photography in many situations you will encounter. A cable or remote release is important for this course. You may be able to borrow one - please advise which camera you have when booking.

Photographing in low light conditions and at night can create wonderful images if appropriate techniques are used. Learn how to photograph effectively and creatively in conditions that often flumox photographers. On this course we maximise the photographic opportunities offered by the beautiful buildings and cityscapes in Canterbury. We work with the available light and your camera flash and ISO.

You will practice balancing these elements to capture powerful night shots and images you thought would be impossible to photograph. We also work with our own torchlight to enjoy the very creative and enjoyable technique of Painting with Light. A torch and a tripod are essential for this course. It may be possible to borrow a tripod if requested before the course.
